Generative AI and Large Language Models as groundbreaking technological innovations promise to redefine the boundaries of contemporary science and engineering. Their capabilities to produce e.g. context-sensitive text, knowledge-based answers, software code, images, music and 3D assets from text prompts and image inputs create opportunities for a manifold of disciplines. In addition, their natural language-based interfaces allow for intuitive dialogue systems and foster the access to modern AI technology and specialized domains even for non-experts. Through the training on large data sets, these models conserve knowledge, identify hidden patterns and even reason over other data modalities. By promoting co-creation, generative AI enables users to advance in their tasks, but at the same time requires awareness of hallucinated content and balancing novel with realistic content. In this presentation, we highlight aspects in this field on recent advances, major technology drivers, potential implications for society, for industry, and for Honda, and introduce also ongoing work in this field.
