abstract = {Human visual perception provides a high data rate but is constrained by a narrow high-resolution field of view, creating a sequential processing bottleneck in complex environments. This talk explores how deictic interfaces can alleviate these constraints by communicating information via spatiotemporal relationships relative to the user, rather than through absolute references or symbolic descriptions.
The first part examines a range of strategies to mitigate the visual bottleneck by recruiting auxiliary sensory modalities. Drawing on a series of empirical studies in mobility and human-robot interaction (HRI), I will demonstrate how these interfaces improve situational awareness and safety while reducing mental load.
The second part explores the inverse: maximizing the high-information capacity of vision through intuitive augmentation. I will present three user studies investigating novel communication methods for HRI, showing significant improvements in the identification of spatial references and the detection of erroneous robot actions, alongside an enhanced user experience.
Together, these findings illustrate the potential for deictic interfaces to both compensate for and capitalize on the nuances of human perception.},
