abstract = {The choice of a good representation for the optimization of human made systems is a complicated task. It covers the issue of, e.g., parametrization type, parameter quantity and placement, or physical modeling. The representation{\textquoteright}s quality has a tremendous influence in the optimization procedure, e.g., regarding optimization speed and solution quality. On the other hand the representation is influenced by the used optimization routine and the given problem in general. So different optimization methods and targets require different representations to get the optimal result. To gather the variety of representation influencing aspects a comprehensive environmental quantification is required. Complex system engineering is such an approach which considers system{\textquoteright}s relevant features simultaneously. The changing environment requires highly flexible setups, that leave room for adaptation. A major task is the proper quantification of the adaptation potential. Evolvability plays an important role solving this task. It is used as a quality criterion for the optimization potential of the system{\textquoteright}s setup in unknown or unpredictable conditions. In this paper we will present an overview on the different notions of evolvability in literature.},
