abstract = {The development of adaptive systems, which react autonomously to changes in their environment, require the coordinated generation of sensors providing information about the environment and processing structures which generate suitable reactions to changed conditions. In this work we demonstrate the applicability of a co-evolutionary design of the sensory and controller parts of a system for the example of an adaptive wing design. The focus of the work is twofold. On the one hand on the realization of developmental stages of the sensory and controlling system. On the other hand on the comparison of the systems evolved with a fixed set of sensors with structures developed with an evolutionary growth process. We ascertained that the success of the growth process depends among others on the relation between the triggering methods and timing of the system enlargement and optimization strategy parameters. Furthermore we analyze differences in the structure of the resulting systems.},
